How Often Should I Exfoliate My Body?
Once a week is a good start to an at home body exfoliation routine with a body scrub. This can be complemented with daily body brushing to problem areas only, for example extra dry skin or areas that need a little boost in circulation (eg legs).
Exfoliating too often could cause irritation and compromise the skins natural protection barrier, so we would recommend no more than three times a week and most people wouldn't even need to exfoliate this frequently.
If you skin feels dry or rough in texture, or you feel like your body lotion isn't making much difference, it's a sign to exfoliate those dead skin cells away.
After exfoliating, you will find your body lotion soaks in beautifully and keeps the skin hydrated, looking brighter and feeling smooth and soft.
Why Exfoliate the Body?
The skin on our body goes through so much, it spends the whole of winter locked away under layers of clothing that tend not to be natural and breathable fibres.
When the weather turns warm, we expose the skin to the sun, pollution and other free radicals and if we apply Suncream this can sit in our pores too.
We pick up dirt and bacteria as we go about our day and produce sweat throughout the day which can all clog up pores. Hormonal changes can lead to breakouts and medical conditions and ageing can lead to dry patches and flaking.
Dry, dead skin cells can also lead to ingrown hairs.
Exfoliating with a body scrub removes just the dead skin cells and stimulates the circulation so blood flow, oxygen and nutrients circulate the area. It exposes the fresh, new health skin cells which were sitting underneath the dead cells, leaving a brighter, healthier complexion. It also increases the lymph drainage to help remove waste from the area.
Your skin is in a cycle of constant renewal and when we are younger this renewal takes around 28 days to completely regenerate.
As we get older, this process slows down and starts to take longer and longer, to almost double this time. Exfoliating gives our skin a helping hand to keep it looking and feeling it's best.
Does one scrub suit all?
A scrub based with a natural abrasive such as salt, sugar or sand is ideal for the body and will suit almost all body skin types (allergies aside).
A body scrub shouldn't be used on the face though, as the particles are often too abrasive. The skin on our face is thinner than that of the body and needs to be treated with care. Likewise, if you were to use a facial scrub on your body, you may find it doesn't make a great deal of difference because its designed to be more gentle on the facial skin.
When not to scrub?
- The day of waxing hair removal (this is exfoliating in itself)
- Immediately after hair removal
- If you have any sunburn
- If you plan to expose your skin to the sun the same day (although a good exfoliation is great before a holiday, do it a few days before)
